Meta Description: Want to register for VAT in Zambia? This guide breaks down who qualifies, what you need, and how to apply with the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA).

What is VAT?
VAT (Value Added Tax) is a consumption tax charged on goods and services in Zambia. It is collected by businesses on behalf of the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) and currently stands at 16%.
If your business is VAT registered, you collect VAT from your customers and submit it to ZRA — while also being able to claim back VAT you paid on business expenses.

Who Qualifies for VAT Registration in Zambia?
You are required to register for VAT if:
Your business has an annual taxable turnover of ZMW 800,000 or more. This is the mandatory threshold set by ZRA.
You can also register voluntarily if your turnover is below this threshold but you want to enjoy the benefits of claiming input VAT on your purchases.

What You Need Before You Apply
Before starting your VAT registration, make sure you have the following ready:
Your TPIN (Taxpayer Identification Number) — you must have a TPIN before registering for VAT. Your National Registration Card (NRC) or passport. Your business registration certificate from PACRA. Proof of your business address such as a utility bill or lease agreement. Your business bank account details.

How to Apply for VAT Registration — Step by Step
Step 1: Visit the ZRA TaxOnline Portal
Go to www.zra.org.zm and log in to the TaxOnline portal using your TPIN and password.
Step 2: Select Tax Registration
Once logged in, navigate to the registration section and select “VAT Registration” from the list of tax types.
Step 3: Fill in Your Business Details
Complete the online form with your business information including your trading name, physical address, nature of business and expected turnover.
Step 4: Upload Supporting Documents
Attach scanned copies of your PACRA certificate, NRC and proof of address.
Step 5: Submit Your Application
Review all information carefully and submit. ZRA will process your application and notify you once approved.
Step 6: Receive Your VAT Certificate
Upon approval, you will receive a VAT registration certificate. You are now legally required to charge VAT on your taxable supplies and file VAT returns monthly.

What Happens After Registration?
Once registered you must file monthly VAT returns by the 18th of every month — even if you have no transactions to report. Failure to file attracts penalties from ZRA, so staying compliant is critical.

Key Benefits of Being VAT Registered
Being VAT registered gives your business credibility especially when dealing with larger companies and government tenders. You can also claim back VAT paid on business purchases, which can reduce your overall costs.
